Live past 65 and the likelihood climbs to 50 percent. Just shy of one quarter of all Americans have been diagnosed by their doctors as having arthritis, according to the National Health Interview Survey published by the National Center for Health Statistics. The survey also indicates that about half of people older than 65 have the ailment. That's 46 million Americans looking for a way to relieve or prevent joint pain. Studies show that Omega-3 fatty acids reduce the need for anti-inflammatory drugs, according to an analysis by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. University of Maryland Medical Center researchers also analyzed 17 clinical trials and concluded that "Omega-3 fatty acids are effective treatment, along with conventional therapies … for joint pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis."
